Book Review of What I talk about when I talk about Running by Haruki Murakami

If I could ever say that a book had made me at least even think about picking up regular exercise of any kind, the one that comes closest is Murakami’s memoir about writing and running, What I talk about when I talk about running.  I have been a fan of Murakami’s writing ever since readingContinue reading “Book Review of What I talk about when I talk about Running by Haruki Murakami”

Book Review of Hidden Nature by Alys Fowler

This book was a cruel one for the sole fact that it made me bawl like a child. The tale of Alys’ life upheavals coupled with her travels up and down the canals of Birmingham (and sometimes London) is one that both intrigued me at points – Fowler is a gardener at heart and theContinue reading “Book Review of Hidden Nature by Alys Fowler”

A Spontaneous Book Haul

This was all a bit sudden and so if it’s waffly, I got excited about being home alone – as shown by me using my ‘nobody’s home inside voice’ XD Hope you like it! Books mentioned in the video: The Hollow Crown – Dan Jones. Why does E=MC (squared)? – Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw.Continue reading “A Spontaneous Book Haul”

Book Review of The Celts by Alice Roberts

So I waited to read this book for no good reason, it was just one of those things. But I’m glad I got around to it because this book is brilliantly written and excellently put together. Alice Roberts really looks at all the practical, rather than ’emotional’ evidence which is out there in the worldContinue reading “Book Review of The Celts by Alice Roberts”

Book Review: Alice by Christina Henry

(Mild Spoilers)  Alice by Christina Henry is a dark/dystopian fantasy rendition of Alice in Wonderland. And one that I wholly enjoyed. The story follows the main character Alice who the reader joins in her cell where she is locked in an uncaring asylum in the ‘Old City’ alongside her cell neighbour Hatcher. The story followsContinue reading “Book Review: Alice by Christina Henry”

Book Review of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Great Gatsby is a fantastic piece of literature. As soon as I read this book I fell in love with it; the plot, setting, characters, and everything else. The main reason I think as to why I took to this book so quickly was the fact that I found myself comparing myself with theContinue reading “Book Review of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald”

Book Review of Delicious! by Ruth Reichl

Delicious! is a story where the narrator, a young woman named Billie, joins the ragtag team from a cookery magazine as an assistant writer. Whilst doing her job she meets new people and also discovers letters between a young girl and a past editor of the magazine dating from World War II. Book Review of The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

(mild spoilers) The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is the story of Achilles from Greek Mythology told through the eyes of his friend and lover Patroclus. Going into the book, as I was acquainted with the original Mythos, I knew it would not have a happy ending. Achilles did not have the happiest ofContinue reading “Book Review of The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller”

Book Review of The Last Days of New Paris by China Mieville

In 1950’s Paris, Surrealist paintings have come to life and roam the streets with Nazis and something darker. The story follows Thibaut, a young resistance fighter, as he navigates the treacherous Parisian streets.      Mieville’s writing style is interesting but I enjoyed the mysterious, ‘surreal’ feeling that it brought me as I read along.Continue reading “Book Review of The Last Days of New Paris by China Mieville”
